Project description
Ghent University's Ledeganck complex has undergone extensive renovation. The more than 42,000 m² site comprises classrooms, research functions and the Ghent University Museum. The renovation proceeded according to a step-by-step plan in which the entire complex was completely renovated in five separate phases and adapted to the current (legal) requirements for fire safety and comfort, while maintaining the specific character of a lab environment. Taking into account the proposed relocation scenarios of the various departments, the renovation of three other buildings on the De Sterre campus (N1, S5 and S12) was included in the project.
Ingenium developed a global vision for the heat production. This resulted in a new, combined and centralized heat production unit for the Ledeganck complex and adjacent greenhouses. The new heating plant now consists of a combination of gas condensing boilers and combined heat and power units (CHPs), the latter providing the majority of the heat and electricity supply for the entire complex.
Ingenium was responsible for the design of the technical equipment. In so doing it sought to offer a modern, dynamic lab environment, with flexibility and comfort as core values. The resulting installation includes a ring ventilation system and a central Canalis structure for electrical power distribution, …
Given the diversity of departments and the dynamic use of lab equipment, such investments pay for themselves in the long term and create added value for the building. In this way, office spaces can be converted into lab spaces (and vice versa) without drastic changes to the building.
In addition to the traditional HVAC technologies, sanitary facilities, special gases and electricity, the assignment included the distribution of type II water and the equipment for the growth chambers.
We used our expertise and know-how to provide the client with intensive guidance. That way, optimum decisions were made with respect to comfort, budget and desired functionality.
