Project description

The new university campus in Bruges was built on a 12,000 m² site. This campus, known as KULAB, owes its name both to its owner KU Leuven and the 'lab' environment in which the technology campus is situated. Offering various academic programs, the campus forms part of a master plan for the entire 'Ter Groene Poorte' site. This master plan brings structure to the campus, with a promenade linking the various department buildings.

An integral sustainable concept was opted for, with a high level of compactness and a thermally efficient outer shell.

Mobile outdoor sun protection provides passive protection against excess heat from the floor-to-ceiling windows, which permit optimal use of natural light. To prevent contamination, Ingenium opted for separate ventilation sets for each lab cluster. Given the hygienic specifications, thermal wheels have been used where possible. Where this is impossible, heat recovery is via batteries. Additional savings in terms of electricity and heat and cold generation are achieved through on-demand provision.

We used our expertise and know-how to provide the client with intensive guidance. That way, optimum decisions were made with respect to comfort, budget and desired functionality.
