Jumbo Centre

FinlandRetail

Project Description

The Jumbo-Flamingo shopping centre in Vantaa, Finland, elevated its climate responsibility significantly through an energy efficiency project implemented in 2021. The project involved designing the largest energy recycling system in Finland, reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Our Input
The collaboration between Granlund and Kesko introduced an energy recycling concept that tapped into refrigeration equipment's condensate heat and reclaimed heat energy from cooling and exhaust air.

Key Features
The project introduced two large heat pump systems that were designed to recycle energy inside the shopping centre. The pumps produce heat at an average output of 700 kWh in winter, covering approximately 75% of the shopping centre’s energy needs. Jumbo's heating and cooling emissions are therefore reduced by up to 440 tonnes per year. Additionally, the energy recycling system dries the incoming air, improving the quality of indoor air and reducing the fogging of refrigeration equipment, which even affects sales.
