Helix Building

LuxembourgOffices and Workplace

Project description

The Helix project consists of the construction of the new administrative headquarters of the Post. It consists of the construction of a completely new building but also, in part, of the conservation and integration into the project of a historic façade. The building, with a total surface area of some 28,000m2, includes 5 levels of underground parking as well as 10 floors above ground. On the top floor, there is, among other things, the company restaurant which benefits from a superb terrace giving a 360° view of the entire city.

Our Input
For this project, we were commissioned to design all the MEP services: heating, cooling, ventilation, sanitation, low voltage electrical installations, low current, fire safety, access control, etc,.

Key Features
The integration of an ice storage tank for heating and air conditioning the building was a central component of this construction project. Three large heat pumps with a thermal output of around 1 MW are used for heating and cooling the building and use the ice storage as a heat source. The ice storage, with a volume of approximately 2,300 m³ of ice, serves as a seasonal storage unit that exploits the phase transition energy from water to ice.  Two additional heat pumps supply the building with hot water.

The Helix building is to be certified to the DGNB Platinum Standard. It was also a finalist in the Best Office & Business Project category of the MIPIM Awards 2023. It was the first time that a Luxembourg project was selected among the finalists.
