FRA20

GermanyData Centres

Project description

FRA20 forms part of the Digital Realty Digital Park Fechenheim data center campus, in the East of Frankfurt, Germany. The project is to be constructed on the former Neckermann Headquarter site. The campus will have a total of 11 new data centre offering an IT are of around 100000m2 in total once completed. FRA20 will accommodate a total whitespace of ~8140m2, divided over 5 levels. There are 2 data hall suites per level of approximately 800m2 each.

Our Input
Ethos Engineering provided the full mechanical and electrical design services for the projects transition from RIBA
Stage 3 to Stage 4. The design covered the FRA20 internal fit-out and associated FRA20 generator tower. The design had to be coordinated with the existing building permit, which required an addendum due to some internal room changes brought about from optioneering options and lessons learnt. The design had to meet a LEED Silver rating, as coordinated with the LEED Consultants.

Key Features
The former Neckermann building, designed by architect Egon Eiermann, is a listed heritage monument at the State Office Hesse for the Perservation of Monuments and holds a rich history for the city of Frankfurt. The conversion and conservation of features of the building was a challenge that was overcome with coordination on this project.

Mechanical Systems:
18 units of Cooling Generation Modules (CGMs) with free cooling chillers, and CRAH cooling systems in data halls.
Chilled and heating water systems (including chiller plant, heat pump plant, FCUs & radiators) for technical rooms and office area. Ventilation and humidity control systems. BMS system. Domestic water services. Soil and waste services.

Electrical Systems:
Redundant utility connections.
2 Independent MV distribution systems, consisting of a total 11 units of 10.6/0.415kV 4MVA transformers.
13 units of 3038kV/2430kW diesel engine generators consisting of 10.6kV rated alternators, remote (dry cooled) radiator systems, SCR’s and bulk storage and redundant distribution systems. TN-C/TN-S earthing system.
Lightning protection system. UPS power distribution. PMS monitoring systems. Generator control & site switching systems. Fully addressable emergency lighting system. Security, fire protection/suppression, and leak detection systems. Structured cabling.
