German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ – Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum)

Germany — Healthcare and Lifesciences

Project Description

The new building for the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) on the campus of the University Hospital Dresden will create a state-of-the-art research and prevention infrastructure. The five-storey building will accommodate around 1,500 m² of floor space in construction phase 1 and a further 1,000 m² in construction phase 2. It will bring together basic oncological research and cancer prevention, including the National Cancer Prevention Center and the BioBank Dresden, in close cooperation with German Cancer Aid.

Our Input
Planning and implementation of the complete technical building equipment for construction phase 1, including a heat pump with 120 kW heating and 200 kW cooling capacity and three central air-conditioning systems with a total air volume of 30,000 m³/h. Decentralized systems, including redundant systems for the biobank, provide the specialized environmental conditions required for research. Further services include a medium-voltage system with an 800 kVA transformer, a 350 kW emergency power system, two central UPS systems and a 35 kWp photovoltaic system. The technical infrastructure also includes BOS radio and fire alarm systems, redundant cooling for the server room and a modern data network with Cat. 7 copper cabling and fiber optics.

Key Features
The building combines highly specialized research infrastructure with a prevention outpatient clinic, placing particularly high demands on reliability, environmental conditions and technical coordination. Specialized facilities include an optical imaging laboratory with vibration-reduced foundations and active optical tables, as well as an S1 laboratory for the evaluation of patient samples. Redundant technical systems and a high-performance energy and data infrastructure ensure reliable operation of the research facilities and the BioBank.
