Project description

The University of Antwerp has erected a new building, named Blue_App, for scientific and technical research into sustainable chemistry.

This project is part of the Blue Gate Antwerp project to redevelop a brownfield site. The high-tech lab building not only meets all technical and safety regulations, but also the strict conditions for new buildings in the climate-neutral business park, the site's visual quality plan and, above all, the requirements for obtaining BREEAM New Construction Excellent certification.

Blue_App is an open innovation hub and a pre-incubator for sustainable chemistry, operating alongside the Bluechem sustainable chemistry incubator, designed by the same team.
Blue_App offers a range of technologies, including (bio)process engineering, chemical, plasma and photo catalysis, (semi-)pilot scale chemical synthesis, flow chemistry, membrane technology, innovative water purification / nutrient recovery, biomass conversion, microbial production and downstream processing, microbiology and algae cultivation. Ingenium was responsible for the design and follow-up of the technical installations, for EPB advice and reporting, for guidance in the BREAAM process and for the entire commissioning assignment.

Flexibility and adaptability were two important technical parameters for the design, without sacrificing the safety requirements that apply to this high-tech application.
