Battersea Power Station

UKMixed Use

Project Description

Battersea Power Station is an iconic London landmark and one of the last major symbols of London’s industrial past. The redevelopment project brings both the Power Station building itself and the surrounding area back to life.

chapmanbdsp are appointed as MEP, environmental, fire and vertical transportation consultants on both Phases 2 and 3 of the development. Phase 2 involves the development of the Power Station itself whilst Phase 3 develops the site surrounding the Power Station.

Phase 2 centres on preserving the historic features and character of the building. The redevelopment provides a truly mixed use space with 254 residential units, 59,000m2 of offices, 41,000m2 of retail, food and beverage, markets and restaurants. A series of villas, apartments and penthouses will be positioned around a garden square as well as either side of the Power Station.

The project also gave copious opportunities for DfMA and pre-fabrication, not just MEP related but also, for the building construction and envelope. The clients initial target for the development was for at least 80% of the installations to be pre-fabricated. This was ultimately exceeded.

Phase 3 has been designed by Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners and includes new homes and a new high street, known as The Electric Boulevard, in an area to the south of the landmark Battersea Power Station.

Electric Boulevard will be the main gateway to the 42-acre development. This phase includes more than 1,200 apartments in a range of sizes and styles in two zones and over 15 floors on either side of the boulevard, as well as a hotel, retail spaces, restaurants and a 3 level car park beneath the whole development.

The undulating building to the west of Electric Boulevard features London’s largest roof gardens, over a quarter of a kilometre long covering the entire top of the building. The garden will have views of the Power Station, river and city beyond.
